The project consists of the design of a 7,200 SF 2nd floor hospital Laboratory expansion over an existing adjacent warehouse roof. The existing 5,200 SF Laboratory will be retained and renovated as well as upgrading the existing Morgue elevator, reconfiguration of the existing Morgue, new stairwell and parking lot expansion based upon prevailing standards and VA guidelines.

The laboratory has been laid out with a second/ third shift in mind to make the most efficient layout. This results in a large open Core laboratory that includes the following in one room: Specimen processing, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Molecular procedures, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Point of Care Testing, and Blood Bank.

With an open laboratory setup it allows the addition of automation in the future which is now a standard in the other institutions. It also allows more flexibility for future changes to other instrumentation and procedures.

Microbiology has been isolated in separate rooms due to criteria dictated by the Veterans Hospital. This will allow the room to be segregated in the even of a bioterrorist specimen coming into the laboratory. By placing this immediately adjacent to the Core laboratory, with windows separating the rooms, we can have a visual connection. This allows better communication between the Core laboratory staff and the Microbiology staff.

Anatomic Pathology is separated from Microbiology and the Core lab to allow a better proximity of this department to the Pathology offices and to isolate the chemical fumes further. The staffing is not cross-trained so separation will not affect the staff’s efficiency.

The A/E team is currently providing design services as necessary to provide full Architecture & Interior Design, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Protection design. Structural engineers are providing seismic analysis and seismic evaluations of the existing structures for vertical expansion.  The A/E team is providing full CD’s, Construction Estimates and Specifications for bidding purposes.
